January 18, 2019 | Track & Field
MARION, Ind. / NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - While the squad may have been split, that did not stop the Ball State track & field program from posting big marks in two different places Friday, as the Cardinals scored one event win and nine top 10 performances over a pair of meets.
First up, the Indiana Wesleyan University Invitational in Marion, Indiana…
The first event of the day, a big win from junior Kelsey Walters in the shot put with a season-best distance of 13.55m. Walters also lead the team in the weight throw, taking second overall with a career-best mark of 16.17m.
Meanwhile at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville…
Senior Jazmin Smith was once again making her presence felt on the track, taking sixth in the 200m with a career-fast time of 24.67. The effort currently ranks fifth on the Mid-American Conference performance list.
The Cardinals also received a strong performance in the long jump from redshirt freshman Michelle Lehmann who turned in a career-best leap of 5.59m. The mark sits 11th on the league performance list and is the best for a Ball State long jumper since the 2015 MAC Championships (Makelle Skelton, 5.88m).
Rounding out the night, junior Maritza Rodriguez with a fourth-place finish and career-best time of 17:10.45 in the 5,000m. It's another top 10 mark on the MAC performance list, currently ranking seventh, and is BSU's best time in the indoor 5,000m since the 2009 MAC Championships (Ali Bishel, 16:39.80).
The Cardinals close competition in the Vanderbilt Invitational Saturday, with action beginning at 11:55 a.m. ET / 10:55 a.m. CT with the first two sections of the mile run.
