Cardinals Hang with No. 5 BYU Before Falling 3-0
January 12, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
PROVO, Utah – In its third-consecutive match against a top-15 opponent, the Ball State University men's volleyball team played No. 5 Brigham Young tough but ultimately dropped the match 3-0 on Saturday night at Smith Fieldhouse.
The No. 14 Cardinals fell to 2-3 on the year with the loss while the Cougars improved to 2-0.
Ball State hit .107 on the night with 27 kills compared to BYU's .375 mark with 35 kills. The Cardinals defended the net well with six total blocks and racked up 12 digs. From the service line, BSU put down three aces.
"We did some good things tonight but just didn't put together a complete game," said head coach Joel Walton. "We have some talent and potential on this team, but the key moving forward will be to put together more consistency to keep the pressure on teams."
The opening set started well for BSU as it scored the first three points of the match. David Siebum beat a triple block and Matt Szews recorded an ace as part of the sequence. BYU quickly responded though and opened up a lead that the Cardinals couldn't recover from.
Sets two and three were similar with Ball State holding multiple leads during the opening stages. The Cardinals couldn't quite hold on to those leads though as BYU made multiple runs to recover its advantage and put things away.
Kaleb Jenness and Szews led the way in kills for BSU with seven apiece. Parker Swartz and Siebum were not far behind with five each. Quinn Isaacson made his first start of the season at setter and compiled 17 assists. Lemuel Turner also made his first start and recorded an ace along with Ball State's first solo block of the year.
The Cardinals now return home for the Don Shondell Active Ankle Challenge. As part of the challenge, Ball State will host UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge on Friday and Saturday. Both matches open at 7 p.m. EST.
