Comeback Falls Short as Ball State Drops 3-2 Decision to UC Santa Barbara
January 18, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. – After falling behind 2-1, the Ball State University men's volleyball team fought back to force a fifth set, but a career high in kills from freshman Kaleb Jenness wasn't quite enough as the Cardinals fell, 3-2, on Friday night at Worthen Arena.
BSU dropped to 2-4 for the season with the loss while CSUB improved to 4-3 on the year.
Kills in the match were even at 57 apiece, but the Gauchos outhit the Cardinals .311 to .276 on the night. Ball State had the advantage in digs with 38 to UCSB's 35. The Cardinals had four more attacking errors and one more service error than Santa Barbara.
"I think we're still struggling with offense and that's what allowed those middle two games to get away," said head coach Joel Walton. "When we generate offense, we're right there with everybody else. When we struggle, we're not quite good enough defensively to overcome it."
Jenness' big night ended with 22 kills while hitting .410. He added one assist, one ace and five digs. David Siebum contributed 14 kills while Matt Szews pitched in 12. Jake Romano compiled 50 assists.
Set one started off rough for Ball State at the Gauchos claimed an early 4-0 lead. The Cardinals proceeded to climb back and tie the game at 8-8 off of back-to-back service aces from Siebum. BSU eventually broke through to build itself a 15-13 lead, which it would not surrender until it won 25-22. The win in game one broke a streak of nine consecutive lost sets for the Cardinals.
The Gauchos again jumped out to an early lead in set two, but Ball State responded and tied the game at nine apiece, forcing a UCSB timeout. The Cardinals snagged a slim lead, but it was short lived as Santa Barbara led by as many as seven before evening the game 1-1.
The third game was dominated by UCSB from the start as it took a 2-1 lead in the match. The Cardinals settled down in set four and took a 9-5 lead early on. BSU extended that lead to six, prompting a Gaucho timeout as it gained control of the set. It was all Cardinals the remainder of the set as they won 25-15 and sent the match to a decisive fifth set.
Ball State quickly took a timeout in set five as UCSB jumped out to a 4-1 advantage but got two points back out of the break and knotted things up at 5-5. Santa Barbara then went up 8-6 as the teams switched sides and grew that lead to three. The Cardinals responded by tying the game and it stayed even until the scoreboard read 13-13, but the Gauchos scored the final two points to take the match.
The Cardinals face a quick turnaround as they welcome No. 10 Cal State Northridge to Worthen Arena tomorrow night (Jan. 19). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
