Ball State Drops First Road Match at No. 11 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. – The Ball State men's volleyball team kept itself within striking distance the entire match, but couldn't quite pull out any sets as it fell to No. 11 Stanford, 3-0, on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion.
The Cardinals dropped to 2-2 on the season with the loss while Stanford improved to 3-0.
Matt Szews and David Siebum led the attack for Ball State on the night with nine kills apiece. Freshman Kaleb Jenness pitched in six. Setter Jake Romano led the Cardinals in assists with 23.
"I'm disappointed with how our team played tonight," said head coach Joel Walton. "We had a few strong individual performances, but as a team we didn't play well enough to win any games or push Stanford to a fourth or fifth set."
Ball State's best chance at winning a game came in set one when it held a 20-18 lead. The Cardinals fell behind early in the set by as many as five, but chipped away and eventually snagged the lead. Stanford went on to tie the set at 22 and scored the final three points of the game to take a 1-0 advantage in the match.
The second set was competitive early as it was tied 13-13 midway through. Stanford then scored three-straight points and BSU couldn't get it closer than that as it dropped the set 25-17. Stanford took control early in the third and final set and closed out the match with a sweep.
Stanford led the match in nearly every statistical category except for block assists. The Cardinals claimed the category by a margin of 16-12. Ball State only trailed in kills by five at a 38-33 mark. Stanford also had 36 assists to BSU's 30.
The Cardinals now travel to Provo, Utah where they will face No. 5 Brigham Young on Saturday night. First serve is slated for 9:00 p.m. ET.
