Men’s Golf Set for Firestone Invitational
September 30, 2018 | Men's Golf
Cardinals tee off Monday at 8:30 a.m.
The Ball State men's golf team continues its fall schedule this week at Akron's annual Firestone Invitational. It's the Cardinals sixth trip to the event in the past eight years, though they were not in the field last year.
The 17-team tournament includes four Mid-American Conference programs.
When
Monday, Oct. 1 (36 holes) -- 8:30 a.m. shotgun start
Tuesday, Oct. 2 (18 holes) -- 8:30 a.m. split tee start
Where
Firestone Country Club – North Course (Akron, Ohio) -- Par 72; 7,125 yards
The Field
Akron, Ball State, Cleveland State, Dayton, Dartmouth, Eastern Michigan, Furman, Illinois State, Mount St. Mary's, Ohio, Old Dominion, Temple, UConn, USC Aiken, William & Mary, Winthrop, Youngstown State
The Lineup
1. Keegan Bronnenberg, So. (71.80 avg., T25 at Trinity Forest)
2. Yianni Kostouros, Fr. (73.80 avg., T50 at Trinity Forest)
3. CJ Jones, So. (73.80 avg., T56 at Trinity Forest)
4. Timothy Wiseman, Sr. (73.00 avg., T26 at Golfweek)
5. Joey Ranieri, Fr. (making collegiate debut)
Ind. Jack Cunningham, So. (74.20 avg., T56 at Golfweek)
About the Cardinals
Ball State's scores so far this year have not produced the results you might expect. The Cardinals are averaging 291 per team round and feature four golfers averaging better than 74 individually. Yet, the team has finishes of 11th and 12th to show for it.
There are likely two factors at play there: the strength of the fields at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and the Trinity Forest Invitational and the crazy low scores at at least one of those events. Last week's Trinity Forest event alone featured nearly 650 birdies and saw a winning team score of 28 under par.
At the Firestone Invitational
Ball State did not compete at last year's Firestone Invitational but did play in the event in the fall of 2016, finishing seventh of 16 teams. Wiseman is the only BSU player competing this week who was on the roster then.
The 17-team tournament includes four Mid-American Conference programs.
