CJ Jones makes biggest move with closing round of 69
AKRON, Ohio -- Led by CJ Jones' round of 3-under-par 69, the Ball State men's golf team moved up two spots Tuesday to finish the Firestone Invitational in a tie for eighth place.
The Cardinals posted a team score of 292 in the final round to finish at 872 (+8) over 54 holes on the North Course at Firestone Country Club. Keegan Bronnenberg led the team with a tie for seventh place at 3 under par.
Tournament host Akron came from seven shots back to win by one on its home course. The Zips finished at 857 (-7) to edge Furman for the title in the 17-team field. Overnight leader Ohio finished two shots back along with Eastern Michigan.
Ohio's Zach Crawford claimed medalist honors at 10 under par, winning by three shots.
Bronnenberg, a sophomore from Muncie, turned in three rounds of even-par or better, closing with a 72 on the way to the first top-10 finish of his BSU career. His 14 birdies for the tournament were the third-most of any player in the field. Bronnenberg sat out last season after transferring and now leads the Cardinals with a 71.50 scoring average.
Jones' 69 matched the lowest round of the year so far by a Ball State golfer. He was 2 over par through his first five holes Tuesday before closing with five birdies and no bogeys in his final 13 to post the low round of his collegiate career. Jones was the biggest mover in the field, climbing 28 spots to finish in a tie for 39th.
Ball State also counted a 74 from Timothy Wiseman and a 77 from Joey Ranieri in the final round. Wiseman was the second BSU player on the final leaderboard in a tie for 29th.
The Cardinals will return to action in two weeks, competing Oct. 14-15 at Indiana's Chatham Hills Collegiate at Chatham Hills Golf Club in Westfield, Indiana.
