
WVB’s Starling Named MAC West Defensive Player of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio - - For her role in leading the Ball State women's volleyball team to a 4-0 record and the Tiger Invitational championship last week, Meg Starling has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week.
Starling, a redshirt senior from Hopkinsville, Kentucky, earns the honor for the first time in her career after a dominating effort at the net last week in which she collected 23 total blocks and averaged 1.64 blocks-per-set. She opened the week with seven total blocks in the sweep of IUPUI (Sept. 11) and followed with seven more in the five-set victory over UMBC (Sept. 14).
After collecting three blocks in the sweep at Towson (Sept. 15), including the block that ended the match, Starling added six more in the victory over La Salle (Sept. 15) to help the Cardinals clinch the Tiger Invitational championship.
Starling also had a solid week on offense, ranking second on a very balanced Ball State offense with 33 kills and a 2.36 kills-per-set average. She also hit .304 (33-5-92) for the week and tallied a season-high 12 kills in the sweep of the host Tigers, while adding 11 in the five-set win over the Retrievers.
Starling enters the week ranked second in the MAC and 52nd nationally with a 1.26 kills-per-set average, while her 58 total block are first in the conference and 26th nationally.
Starling and the rest of the Ball State women's volleyball team open MAC play this weekend starting 7 p.m. Friday at Western Michigan. The Cardinals will then travel to Northern Illinois for an 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT first serve Saturday.
