MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team (0-2) will look for its first win of the season when it travels to Iowa City, Iowa, this weekend for two games.  The Cardinals will first face Dartmouth on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.CT (3:30 ET) before closing out play on Sunday against host Big Ten foe Iowa at 1:30 p.m. CT (2:30 ET).
"We are excited to hit the road this weekend and go after these games," Ball State head field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said.  "We have two quality opponents. The season is still very young, so our focus is less on our opponents and more on what we need to do to continue growing tactically and establishing our on-field chemistry."
Ball State is coming off two losses over opening weekend.  The Cardinals were able to take some positives and grow as a team under first-year head coach Bernthal.  Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Chavez started both games for the Cardinals, playing the entire 70 minutes of regulation for both contests.  Despite suffering losses against Saint Francis (Pa.) and Big Ten foe Indiana, Chavez managed 11 total saves for the weekend.  She registered six saves Friday against the Red Flash and five versus the Hoosiers on Sunday.
Ball State hasn't played in Iowa City since the 2016 season when the Cardinals suffered a 4-1 loss to the Hawkeyes on Sept. 18.  Ball State's goal that day came from current graduate assistant Mikayla Mooney.  Sunday's contest will mark the second Big Ten member the Cardinals will have faced in a week and the second of five this season.  Ball State will also compete against Ohio State (Sept. 7), Michigan (Oct. 14) and Northwestern (Oct. 21).  Dartmouth and Ball State have never met in program history.
After this weekend, Ball State will continue its four-game road swing when the Cardinals travel to Columbus, Ohio, to play Big Ten foe Ohio State (Sept. 7) at 4 p.m. and then Lehigh (Sept. 8) beginning at noon.  Ball State will return to the Briner Sports Complex Sept. 15 when it hosts Miami University in its Mid-American Conference opener at noon.
