Field Hockey Loses Home Opener To Big Ten foe Indiana, 2-0
August 26, 2018 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team (0-2) fell to Big Ten foe Indiana (1-1) by a score of 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex. Â Today's contest marked the first time since 2014 the Hoosiers had played in Muncie. Â
Â
"We are really pleased with how we bounced back from Friday obviously that was a tough result for us," Ball State head field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said.  "Our big focus was getting consistency moving forward in the areas we've been focusing on and executing them.  We made some major gains in our tactical kind of game and our chemistry as a team.  Big maturing day for us. It was awesome to be at home.  We had great energy from our fans and our families.  We are going to keep pressing on next week and problem solving for our continued growth."
Â
Both teams played strong defense for the first 20 minutes of play. Â The Hoosiers got on the board first after scoring back-to-back goals with 13:51 remaining in the first stanza. Â Despite the Cardinals efforts, they couldn't connect offensively and would trail the Hoosiers 2-0 at intermission.
Â
In the second half, the Cardinals held the Hoosiers scoreless for the remainder of the contest. Â Unfortunately, Ball State couldn't capitalize on the other end of the field.
Â
For the game, Ball State had eight total shot attempts with redshirt sophomore Rachel Pereira, redshirt junior Michelle Shampton and junior Arantxa Rosainz Caloca each leading the squad with two apiece.
Â
Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Grace Chavez registered five saves and competed the full 70 minutes of action for the second straight contest. Â
Â
The Ball State field hockey team continues non-conference action when they face Dartmouth College (Sept. 1) at 2:30 p.m. and Big Ten foe Iowa (Sept. 2) at 1:30 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa.
