Volleyball Ready For Friday's Showdown With UIndy
August 16, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. -- With a majority of the preseason behind it, the Ball State women's volleyball team will put its hard work to the test Friday, Aug. 17 when it hosts UIndy in a 7 p.m. exhibition match in Worthen Arena.
Admission to the contest is free and fans are also encouraged to catch the team Saturday, Aug. 18 at Scheumann Stadium when Ball State hosts its annual Fall Fan Jam from 5 to 7 p.m.
"We are very excited to welcome UIndy to Worthen Arena," head coach Kelli Miller said. "Friday's match gives us an excellent opportunity to gain some experience with our new squad and get our freshmen some quality reps in the jersey in front of a real crowd."
Friday's match versus the Greyhounds will also give Ball State's 16 players a chance to face someone other than themselves for the first time this preseason.
"Playing an opponent other than ourselves at this point in the preseason is invaluable," Miller said. "It allows us to see what our strengths are and what areas we need to continue to work on. It also sets the tone for what the 2018 season is going to be. This is our first opportunity to showcase the type of spirit our team is going to be about, and if the preseason is any indication, I am really looking forward to seeing it."
Already this preseason, the Cardinals have shown their spirit in numerous different ways, aided by the leadership of its seven-member senior class.
"Over the course of the preseason, I have learned we have a really good core group," Miller said. "We have an experienced group that is bound and determined to make their senior year their best year at Ball State. We have a senior group that is not only willing to push themselves, but also drive the rest of the team to reach their full potential."
With the program coming off a 2017 Mid-American Conference West Division Championship, and a group of seniors determined to leave their best on the court, the 2018 season is shaping up to be a good one.
"When the game is on the line, it's the people on the court who have to win it," Miller concluded. "With this group of seniors leading the way, I am very excited about our chances this year."
After wrapping up its preseason slate this weekend, the Cardinals will gear up for next weekend's season-opening Dayton Invitational. Ball State opens the two-day event Friday (Aug. 24) with a 3 p.m. match versus South Alabama, before a pair of Saturday (Aug. 25) matches against Dayton (1 p.m.) and Marshall (5 p.m.).
