Ball State Golfer Timothy Wiseman Qualifies for 118th U.S. Open

Senior-to-be emerges from playoff at Springfield CC to punch his ticket
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Seven past Ball State men's golfers have gone on to play in major championships … more than 30 of them in total. But no Cardinal has played in one while still in college. Until now.
Timothy Wiseman, who just wrapped up his junior year for the Cardinals, will compete in the 118th U.S. Open next week at Shinnecock Hills in New York. The Corydon, Indiana, native earned one of five advancing spots out of Monday's sectional qualifier at Springfield Country Club in Ohio, securing his bid in a playoff.
"I was overwhelmed with emotion once it actually happened," Wiseman said. "But I felt a sense of calm during the day. There wasn't a lot of pressure on me, and I kind of went out with the mindset of having nothing to lose. My heart rate went up a little bit during the playoff, but throughout the day my emotions were in check."
Dubbed "the longest day in golf," Monday's action featured more than 800 competitors at 11 sites across the country and in England. That mass was competing for a total of 71 available spots in the field for America's national championship.
Wiseman was 2 under par for the 36-hole qualifier after posting rounds of 68 and 70 in Springfield. He finished as part of a three-way tie for fourth place and then survived a playoff of three golfers for two spots.
Wiseman and Web.com Tour player David Gazzolo outlasted PGA Tour player Corey Conners to punch their tickets. All three players bogeyed the first playoff hole. With Gazzolo in for par and Conners in for bogey on the second playoff hole, Wiseman faced a four-foot par putt. He poured it in to clinch his spot in the U.S. Open.
"It's still sinking in," Wiseman said. "I'll enjoy it tonight and some tomorrow, but you best believe I'll be on a golf course tomorrow practicing. Once everything settles down, I'm going to get up there and try to make the cut and see what happens. I shocked some people today, and I'm hoping I can do the same thing at Shinnecock."
Ohio State's Will Grimmer won the Springfield qualifier at 5 under par. Illinois All-American Dylan Meyer and PGA Tour winner Brian Stuard also advanced.
Wiseman has been a member of the Ball State lineup for the past three years and finished the 2017-18 season with a 74.71 scoring average. He tied for third at the MAC Championships to help the Cardinals to a runner-up finish at Sycamore Hills in Fort Wayne.
Wiseman's appearance at the U.S. Open will mark the 18th by a member of the Ball State golf family since 1970. Most recently, 2006 graduate Patrick Wilkes-Krier qualified for the 2016 championship at Oakmont.
The 2018 U.S. Open begins Thursday, June 13 at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, New York. Shinnecock has hosted four previous U.S. Opens, most recently in 2004.
