June 27, 2018 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Another athletic year is in the books for the Cardinals. Ball State student-athletes, coaches and teams accomplished several notable feats in 2017-18.
Â
Through much discussion, BallStateSports.com has identified the top 10 storylines of the year. We are revealing the storylines one-by-one each week over a period of 10 weeks.
Â
The stories are being revealed in chronological order, beginning with the fall season and running through the spring. We continue this week with a look back at some of the year's biggest academic achievements.
Â
Academic All-Americans & Postgraduate Scholars
Â
For the second straight year, Ball State boasted multiple Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients.
Â
Alyssa Heintschel of the soccer team was both. The senior goalkeeper was named an Academic All-American for the second year in a row, earning first-team honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America. The pre-med major with a 4.0 GPA also earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship to put toward medical school at Oakland University this fall.
Â
Carley Shannon of the BSU field hockey team joined Heintschel during the fall season in earning a Postgraduate Scholarship. She will continue her studies in Ball State's exercise science master's program.Â
Â
At the Division I level, the NCAA hands out fewer than 100 postgrad scholarships a year. Ball State has now had five recipients over the past two years, with Tanner Barton (men's swimming), Matt Helm (men's tennis) and Caleb Stayton (baseball) earning the honor in 2016-17.
Â
In the winter, women's basketball player Carmen Grande became the Cardinals' second Academic All-American for 2017-18. Like Heintschel, she was a first-team selection and one of just five players in the country to earn that distinction.
Â
Ball State also experienced continued academic success at the department level, as eight BSU teams posted perfect scores of 1,000 for the latest reporting year in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR). The women's tennis team highlighted the report by achieving the perfect mark for the fourth straight year.
