Miami Snaps Ball State’s Winning Streak in 5-3 Decision
May 08, 2018 | Baseball
OXFORD, Ohio – A three-run fourth inning gave host Miami a 5-1 lead and the RedHawks held on from there to earn a 5-3 win over the Ball State baseball team Tuesday night at McKie Field. The loss snapped Ball State's seven-game winning streak.
Christian Tejada capped Miami's (29-16) big inning with a two-out, two-run single. Ball State (26-21) immediately responded in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-run home run down the left field line from sophomore Noah Powell to make the score 5-3.
The Cardinals threatened again in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but were held off the scoreboard by Miami's bullpen. Ball State's best chance to score came in the sixth when the Cardinals loaded the bases with one out. However, Miami reliever Michael Hendricks forced a pop out and fly out to escape unscathed.
Senior Jeff Riedel saw his team season-high 15-game hitting streak come to an end as the outfielder went 0-for-5. Powell was the only Cardinal to tally multiple hits as the shortstop hit his fourth home run and finished 2-for-4.
Ball State freshman reliever Cody Freed wiggled out of some jams to hold Miami off the scoreboard in the final four innings.
Miami starter Jay Wilson earned his second win of the season by going 5.0 innings and limiting the Cardinals to three runs, their fewest in seven games.
Ball State now returns home to take on Big Ten foe Purdue tomorrow, May 9. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
