Jameson Stifles Northern Illinois in 11-0 Win
April 28, 2018 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Freshman hurler Drey Jameson carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning as the Ball State baseball team cruised to an 11-0 victory over Northern Illinois Saturday afternoon at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
A first inning error was the only way a Northern Illinois (15-27, 5-12 MAC) batter reached base against Jameson until the seventh inning. The righty retired 18 batters in a row until Jake Dunham laced a solid single to center with two outs in the seventh.
Jameson did have some defensive help to keep the no hitter alive, especially from shortstop Noah Powell. In the top of the fifth, Powell made a nifty over-the-shoulder catch in left field to prevent Scooter Bynum from getting a hit. Powell then handled a high chopper over the mound from the very next batter and just beat Joe Jumonville on a bang-bang play at first base.
Jameson, a native of Greenfield, Indiana, went 8.0 innings, struck out eight, allowed two singles and did not walk a batter to improve to 4-0 against MAC competition.
Ball State's (21-20, 9-8) bats provided plenty of run support as the Cardinals scored in six of their eight at-bats. Senior Jeff Riedel put Ball State on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI triple to the right center field gap. Riedel became the 10th player in Ball State history to hit two triples in a game when he tripled to left center in the eighth inning. He finished with three hits and scored three times.
Seven Cardinals chipped in with at least one RBI while senior Colin Brockhouse finished with three RBIs and junior catcher Griffin Hulecki notched two RBIs.
Ball State will go for its first league series sweep of the season tomorrow, April 29. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
