Michael Makris ties for 23rd, leads team with final-round 72
FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- The Ball State men's golf team dropped three spots Sunday to finish the Mason Rudolph Championship in 12th place.
Michael Makris closed with the Cardinals' low round of the day, a 72, to finish tied for 23rd with a 54-hole total of 221 (+8) on the Vanderbilt Legend Club South Course.
Fourth-ranked Vanderbilt (+1) came from five shots back entering the day to win its home tournament by three shots over No. 7 Alabama (+4). Overnight leader Liberty (+9) finished eight shots back in third.
Ball State fell to 12th in the 15-team field after closing with a round of 301 to finish with a total of 902 (+50). In addition to the 72 from Makris, the Cardinals also counted a 74 from Timothy Wiseman, a 77 from Michael VanDeventer and a 78 from Johnny Watts in the final round.
Vanderbilt's John Augenstein entered Sunday tied with Alabama's Davis Shore for the top spot on the individual leaderboard but finished five shots clear of Shore after a closing 67 moved him to 7 under par for the tournament.
The Mason Rudolph Classic featured seven teams ranked among the top 70 in the country and nine of the nation's top 100 players.
Ball State will return to action this weekend at Ohio State's Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in its final tuneup for the MAC Championships. The Kepler gets underway Saturday on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University Golf Club.
