Men’s Golf to See Three Top-10 Teams at Mason Rudolph in Nashville
April 12, 2018 | Men's Golf
Cardinals are part of 15-team field with action beginning Friday morning
The Ball State men's golf team returns to action for the first time in a month this weekend at Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph Championship.
The event is scheduled for 72 holes over three days on the South Course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club, though a threatening weekend forecast could force adjustments. The action gets underway Friday with 36 holes and a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT (9 ET).
A trio of top-10 teams highlights the competition in Franklin, Tennessee. The host Commodores are No. 4 in the Golfstat national rankings and will field two teams. Additionally, Florida is No. 6 and Alabama is No. 7.
The 15-team field also includes four more teams in the top 70 -- Liberty (46), Louisville (47), Georgia (55) and Middle Tennessee (67) -- plus Charlotte, East Tennessee State, South Dakota, Troy, High Point and Tennessee Tech.
As it has all year, the Ball State lineup will consist of three seniors -- Johnny Watts, Michael VanDeventer and Michael Makris -- along with junior Timothy Wiseman and freshman Jack Cunningham.
Watts leads the way with a 73.14 stroke average this season, while VanDeventer is coming off his second collegiate victory. He led wire to wire at last month's Pinehurst Intercollegiate and guided the Cardinals to a runner-up finish as a team.
The Mason Rudolph Classic begins a busy three-week stretch for Ball State. The Cardinals will compete at Ohio State's Robert Kepler Intercollegiate (April 21-22) and host the MAC Championships at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne (April 27-29) before the month is out.
