Cardinals Blank Purdue For Second Straight Win, 2-0
April 10, 2018 | Baseball
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Sophomore Noah Powell broke up a scoreless tie with a leadoff home run in the top of the sixth inning to propel the Ball State baseball team to a 2-0 win at Purdue Tuesday evening. This was the first time the Cardinals have shutout Purdue in West Lafayette since 1996.
Powell's home run was the second of the season for the shortstop and easily cleared the left field fence. Ball State (16-15) is now 11-1 when hitting a home run this season.
The Cardinals added an insurance run in the ninth inning without ever putting the ball in play. The frame was filled with two walks, a hit batter, two wild pitches and a balk. Junior Chase Sebby was hit on the very first pitch of the inning and eventually scored on a balk.
Ball State's pitching worked out of several jams to keep Purdue (15-13) off the scoreboard. The Boilermakers stranded 11 runners on base. In four consecutive innings from the fourth through the seventh, Purdue left runners on second and third base. Freshman right-handed pitcher Cody Freed earned the save by retiring eight straight batters to end the game. Four other Ball State pitchers saw action with juniors Evan Marquardt and Nick Floyd each tossing a pair of innings.
The Cardinals have notched back-to-back shutouts for the first time since April 2011. Ball State tallied a 5-0 win over Eastern Michigan on Sunday.
Ball State returns home this coming weekend to face conference foe Miami. The first game of the series is slated for Friday, April 13 at 3 p.m.
