Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Gardner-Webb
March 07, 2018 | Baseball
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Ball State junior pitcher Nick Floyd had a career outing to lead the Cardinals to a 6-1 win over host Gardner-Webb in game one of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. GWU rallied to win the second game, 8-6.
In the opener, Floyd tossed six innings and struck out seven batters. Both of those numbers are personal bests. He only faced three batters over the minimum in his six innings of work and allowed just one run. Sophomore transfer Nolan Gazouski came on to pitch the final three frames and earn his first save as a Cardinal. The righty struck out four batters and gave up just two hits.
After the two teams exchanged a single tally in the second inning, Ball State (5-7) took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth. Junior John Ricotta and senior Jeff Riedel scored on separate wild pitches. In the seventh, junior Griffin Hulecki notched his first collegiate triple to plate a run and extend the cushion to 4-1. The Cardinals added a run in the eighth and ninth innings to account for the final score.
Game two was scheduled for seven innings, and Ball State had a comfortable 4-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning following senior Colin Brockhouse's three-run home run. Brockhouse leads the team in home runs (4) and RBIs (13).
Unfortunately, Gardner-Webb (10-3) rallied with four two-out runs in the bottom of the fifth to even the score. The Bulldogs finished the comeback thanks to Chandler Redmond's grand slam in the sixth inning.
Riedel went 4-for-4 at the plate with a triple, RBI and two runs scored in the losing effort.
This was the first ever meeting between the two teams.
Ball State will wind down its Spring Break trip this weekend with a three-game series at Western Carolina. Game one is slated for Friday, March 9 at 5 p.m.
