March 26, 2018 | Baseball
VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team raced out to a 12-0 lead and finished with a 13-5 victory at Valparaiso Monday afternoon. The Cardinals have now won five of their last six games to improve to 13-11 overall.
Ball State scored in seven of its nine at-bats and tallied its third highest run total of the season. Nine players recorded an RBI while seniors Justin Kirkpatrick and Jeff Riedel each hit their first home runs at Ball State. Kirkpatrick led the Cardinals lineup with three hits including his two-run homer in the fourth inning. Riedel followed suit with a solo shot one inning later.
On the mound, junior Evan Marquardt put up solid numbers in his first start. The righty went 5.0 innings, allowed just two hits and equaled his personal high with nine strikeouts. Sophomores Mike Pachmayer and Nolan Gazouski combined to toss 3.2 innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen. Gazouski struck out a pair of Valpo (7-13) batters with the bases loaded to end a scoring threat in the seventh inning.
With the victory, Ball State has won 11 of the last 12 meetings against the Crusaders and four straight overall.
The Cardinals return home this coming weekend to take on conference foe Central Michigan. Game one is set for Friday, March 30 at 3 p.m.
