Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Fort Wayne to Win Second Match in a Row

MUNCIE, Ind.—The 11th ranked Ball State men's volleyball team hosted No. 15 Fort Wayne Saturday night. The Cardinals took down the Mastodons, 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-20), marking the second time this week Ball State has won that matchup.
Ball State had 43 kills for a .280 hitting percentage on the night. The Cardinals also added 41 assists, four 36 digs, service aces and 9.5 total team blocks. Matt Szews led the way for Ball State with 13 kills along with five digs and two blocks. Matt Walsh added seven kills while Blake Reardon and Ben Chinnici each knocked down six. Parker Swartz had four kills along two service aces. Jake Romano finished the night with 35 assists.
Ball State scored the first four points of the opening set. The Cardinals kept the momentum going before forcing a Fort Wayne timeout out 14-10. Ball State went on to take the set, 25-21. Szews led the way with five kills with Ben Chinnici adding three. Walsh was able to knock down two kills and Mitch Weiler added one. Weiler led the team in digs with four. Swartz had the lone solo block for the Cardinals in the opening set.
Fort Wayne came back and fought with Ball State in set number two. The set saw seven tied scores and five lead changes. Walsh and Chinnici each had three kills in the set. Swartz, Romano, Weiler and Szews each notched two kills. Adam Wessel had a team-high six digs with four added by Romano. The Cardinals were able to take the second set with a score of 25-22.
In the third set, Szews had six kills while Blake Reardon had five. Swartz, Romano, and Walsh each got in on the action with two kills apiece. The Cardinals finished the final set with a .600 hitting percentage. Romano had added 14 assists in the final set. Ball State was able to secure the victory with a 25-20 set three win.
The Ball State men's volleyball team will hit the road again as they travel to Loyola-Chicago and Lewis next week. The Cardinals will take on the Ramblers on Thursday, March 22 at 7 p.m. Ball State will then battle the Flyers on Saturday, March 24 also at 7 p.m.
