February 03, 2018 | Women's Basketball
ATHENS, Ohio - The Ball State women's basketball team (18-4, 7-4 MAC) made a 25-point comeback, but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals fell 80-76 to Ohio (12-9, 6-4 MAC) Saturday afternoon in the Convocation Center.
For the second-straight game, freshman forward Oshlynn Brown registered a double-double with 16 points while pulling down 11 rebounds. Behind Brown, senior forward Destiny Washington scored 15 points while junior guard Nakeya Penny chipped 12 points on the day. Senior forward Moriah Monaco tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cardinals struggled to get shots to fall at the start, going 1-of-6 from the field midway through the first quarter. Ohio came out strong, shooting 71 percent from the floor to take an early 13-2 advantage over the Cardinals at the 5:20 mark. The Bobcats continued to keep the pressure on and led 22-8 after the first. Ohio held the Cardinals to the fewest points scored in the first stanza all season.
The Bobcats continued to make their presence felt down low, and from behind the arc during the second stanza. Ohio used 16 points in the paint and five 3-pointers to take a 39-20 lead into halftime. Brown led Ball State with seven points and six rebounds in the first half.
Ball State opened the third period with an 8-0 run to make it a 39-28 ball game at the media timeout. Washington scored five of those points during the three minute stretch. Junior guard Jasmine Samz then converted on a 3-point play that would put Ball State back into single digits for the first time since the start of the game, 40-31. After that, the Cardinals continued to groove on offense, finding success in the paint as Ball State aggressively attacked the basket. Ball State made it a 41-38 contest after a layup from Brown with 3:55 on the clock. The Cardinals headed into final frame down five, 54-49.
A 3-point basket by Samz and a coast-to-coast layup from junior guard Carmen Grande knotted the game 59-59 at the 7:00 minute mark in the fourth stanza. After that, Ohio put together a run that would allow the Bobcats to go back up by nine (69-60) with 2:54 left to play. Ball State managed to come within four (76-72) off of a jumper from Penny but it wasn't enough as Ohio would win its fifth straight over the Cardinals.
