Women's Basketball Outlasts Toledo On Senior Day

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team celebrated Senior Day with a 78-73 victory over Toledo (17-11, 8-8 MAC) Saturday afternoon in Worthen Arena.
With the win, the Cardinals are now 23-4 overall and 12-4 in Mid-American Conference action. Ball State has earned a first round bye to the upcoming 2018 MAC Tournament in Cleveland with today's victory. This marks the fifth time under sixth year head coach Brady Sallee the Cardinals have earned their ticket straight to Cleveland.
For the third straight game, junior guard Jasmin Samz led the Cardinals in scoring with a career best 20 points. Junior guard Carmen Grande chipped in 17 points and dished out nine assists. Senior guard Frannie Frazier had 13 points and led the squad defensively with eight rebounds while senior forward Destiny Washington ended the day with 10 points.
The first quarter started as a tight affair as both teams traded baskets for the first two minutes of play. With the game tied 10-10, the Cardinals put together a 14-4 run to give them a 24-14 advantage with 37 seconds remaining in the quarter. During that run, the Cardinals got help from Monaco, Grande, junior guard Nakeya Penny and freshman forward Oshlynn Brown. Toledo would hit a basket at the buzzer but the Cardinals still took a 24-18 lead heading into the second frame.
Ball State's defense stepped it up in the second stanza, holding Toledo to only 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from the field. The Cardinals continued a strong start offensively, shooting 53.3 percent from the floor. Grande and Samz led the Cardinals charge with 10 points apiece in the first half. Typically the Cardinals get most of their points from in the paint but at the half it was tied 18-to-18 against the Rockets. Ball State found most of its success from 3-point range (58 percent) to register a 45-33 lead over Toledo at intermission.
Toledo came out strong defensively in the third quarter and began to find more of an offensive rhythm. The Cardinals continued to have control but the Rockets did come within six (56-50) at the 3:09 mark. Samz knocked down a 3-pointer that would spark an 11-4 run which was capped off by a fast break layup from Frazier, giving Ball State a 67-54 advantage heading into the final frame of play.
The Rockets opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to come within three (67-64) of Ball State with 4:10 remaining in the ball game. The Cardinals struggled to get their shots to fall in the final quarter, hitting only 20-percent from the field. Toledo continued to fight back making it a one-point (74-73) ball game with 19 seconds left. Fortunately for the Cardinals, Grande would be sent to the line three times making 5-of-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch, sealing the victory for Ball State.
