Men’s Volleyball Wins Third Straight Match with 3-1 Victory Over Quincy

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team traveled to Quincy, Ill. Friday night in hopes of securing its third straight victory. The Cardinals were able to take down the Hawks, 3-1 (26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-18) moving to 3-2 in conference play.
Ball State totaled 56 kills for a .279 hitting percentage. The Cardinals also added 51 digs, six service aces, and 4.0 total team blocks.
Three Ball State Cardinals notched double digit kills for the night. Blake Reardon led the way with 15 while Matt Walsh tallied 12 and Matt Szews had 10. Walsh and Szews also each had two service aces. Walsh led the team in blocks with four with Jake Romano adding two. Romano led the way in assists with 41. Mitch Weiler once again had a team-high in digs with 12 along with adding nine kills. Romano was right behind him in digs with 11.
In the opening set, Reardon and Szews each had four kills to lead the team. Walsh, Weiler and Parker Swartz all notched two kills apiece. Romano had 11 assists and one block assist in the set. Walsh added one solo block and one block assist. In a set that saw 13 tied scores and five lead changes, the Cardinals eventually came out on top, 26-24.
Ball State carried that momentum into set two, knocking down 14 kills for a .344 hitting percentage. Swartz and Walsh were each able to mark a service ace. Walsh and Reardon each had four kills while Weiler and Romano added three apiece. One of Weiler's kills secured the set two win for the Cardinals, 25-20.
Set three was led by Quincy's Anthony Winter who knocked down 12 of the team's 18 kills. Winter finished the set with a .571. For the Cardinals, Walsh had the most kills with four. Weiler was right behind him with three along with two added from Szews and Ben Chinnici. Romano and Adam Wessel led the third set in digs with four apiece. However, the performance of Winter and the rest of the Quincy squad proved to be too much for Ball State in set number three. The Hawks took the set, 25-23.
In set number four, Ball State was able to hold Quincy to a .100 hitting percentage while hitting .364 themselves. Reardon notched six of the team's 16 kills with four more added by Szews. Weiler and Romano tied for highest team digs with four. Walsh added one solo block in the set with one service ace added by Szews. The Cardinals were able to take the set, 25-18, along with taking the match, 3-1.
The 14th ranked Ball State men's volleyball team now moves to 8-7 on the season with a record of 3-2 in the MIVA. The Cardinals will continue conference action tomorrow at Lindenwood at 7:30 p.m.
