Three Cardinals Post Double Digit Kills as MVB Wins Fourth Straight Match

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The No. 14 Ball State men's volleyball team avoided an upset Saturday evening as they took down Lindenwood, 3-2 (19-25, 29-27, 27-29, 25-22, 15-12). This marks the fourth straight victory for the Cardinals.
Ball State had 59 total kills for a .224 hitting percentage. The Cardinals also had 66 digs, 8.0 total team blocks and three service aces. Blake Reardon, Mitch Weiler and Parker Swartz were the three Cardinals to knock down double digit kills. Reardon had 12 kills for a .205 hitting percentage. He also had seven digs, two block assists and one service ace. Weiler also notched 12 kills along with eight digs. Swartz had 11 kills for a team-high hitting percentage of .562. Matt Walsh had a team high six total blocks while added six kills. David Siebum had six kills and three digs in the contest. Jake Romano led the team in assists with 48 and in digs with 19.
In the opening set, the Cardinals totaled 8 kills, but hit in the negatives. Reardon, Walsh and Ben Chinnici each tallied two kills in the set. Weiler and Matt Szews led the way in digs with three apiece. Romano had seven assists in set number one. The Lions proved to be too powerful in the first set, taking down the Cardinals, 25-19.
The Cardinals were able to score the first two points of set number two. Ball State and Lindenwood traded points, which led to 14 tied scores and four lead changes. The Cardinals were able to make a comeback to tie the match and take the second set in OT, 29-27. Weiler and Siebum each had five kills in the second set, hitting .500 and .300 respectively. Walsh had two blocks with one apiece added by Reardon, Swartz, Romano and Chinnici.
The back-and-forth play continued into the third set with 17 tied scores and four lead changes. Neither team led by more than three points in the set. Weiler had five of Ball State's 14 kills. Reardon, Swartz and Szews each tilled two kills apiece. Despite hitting better than the Lions, Ball State fell in the set, 27-29.
The Cardinals were able to tally the first two points of set number four. Ball State went up by as much as four before a run by the Lions evened up the score, 6-6. The Lions refused to quit, but still fell to the Cardinals, 25-22. Reardon and Swartz each knocked down four kills in the set. Romano had 10 assists and four digs. Ball State finished the set with six block assists.
In the deciding set, Ball State totaled nine kills for a .308 hitting percentage. Ball State went up 10-7 and forced a Lindenwood timeout. After the timeout, the Lions proved that they were a force to be reckoned with. Lindenwood forced the Cardinals to call a timeout with the score of 11-9 in favor of Ball State. The Cardinals eventually secured the set five victory, 15-12. Reardon had three kills while Swartz and Weiler had two. Romano had a team-high four digs with three added by Szews.
The 14th ranked Cardinals now move to 9-7 overall for the season with a MIVA record of 4-2. Ball State will now work to prepare for their Spring Break trip to the west coast. The Cardinals will take on four California teams from Mar. 3 to Mar. 10.
