Men’s Volleyball Flies Past UC San Diego For Fifth Straight Win

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The 11th ranked Ball State men's volleyball team won its fifth match in a row Saturday evening with a sweep (25-23, 25-22, 25-22) of UC San Diego.
The Cardinals had 39 total kills for a .281 hitting percentage. The Ball State squad also had 30 digs, 13 block assists and six service aces.
Matt Walsh and Matt Szews knocked down double digit kills. Walsh had 12 kills for a team-high .647 hitting percentage. He also had three service aces and three block assists. Szews also notched 12 kills for a .385 hitting percentage. Szews also had one service aces, five digs and a team-high four blocks. Mitch Weiler led the team in digs with nine while also adding two kills and two assists. Jake Romano had 34 assists on the night. Blake Reardon had seven kills and five digs while Parker Swartz added four kills and three digs.
The opening set saw 15 tied scores and five lead changes. The Tritons actually outhit Ball State with 14 kills and a .344 hitting percentage. The Cardinals had 13 kills and a .207 hitting percentage. However, Ball State was able to prevail with a final score of 25-23. Walsh had five kills, one ace and one block in set one. Szews and Reardon each knocked down three kills with one apiece added by Swartz and Romano.
In set number two, Ball State was able to hold UC San Diego to a .172 hitting percentage. Szews and Walsh combined for 10 of the team's 13 kills. Swartz and Szews had two block assists in the set. Weiler had four digs while Reardon added three. After seven tied scores and two lead changes, a Walsh kill won the second set for the Cardinals, 25-22.
Ball State continued momentum into set number three, hitting for .407. Reardon notched four kills and a .429 hitting percentage in the closing set. Szews also had four kills along with three digs and one block. A Triton attack error secured the set for Ball State, 25-22. The Cardinals took the match 3-0.
The Cardinal squad is now 10-7 on the season. The Ball State men's volleyball team will continue west coast, non-conference action on Wednesday, March 7 at Concordia-Irvine. Match time is set for 10 p.m. Eastern Time.
