Men’s Volleyball Snaps Loyola’s Eight Match Win Streak with 3-1 Victory

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team took down the sixth ranked Loyola-Chicago Ramblers Saturday night, 3-1, in front of an excited Muncie crowd. The Cardinals snapped the Ramblers' eight match win streak and handed them their first conference loss of the season. This comes just a day after Ball State pulled the upset (3-0) over No. 8 Lewis.
The Cardinals tallied 61 total kills for a .291 hitting percentage on the night. Three Ball State players tallied double digit kills; Matt Szews with 16 and Mitch Weiler and Blake Reardon each with 14. Jake Romano led the way in assists with 44. The Cardinals had seven service aces on the night. Romano, Szews and Matt Walsh each had two aces apiece with one added by Quinn Isaacson. Romano also led the team in digs with 13. Weiler added 12 digs. The Cardinals had 8.5 total team blocks in the four sets of play.
The match started off with an exciting set one. After 10 tied scores and three lead changes, the Cardinals were able to take the set, 34-32, on a Szews kill. Ball State was able to knock down 19 kills for a .405 hitting percentage. Weiler and Szews led the set with six kills apiece. Both players hit over .600 with Weiler hitting for .667 and Szews hitting for .625. Walsh added three kills while Reardon had two. Walsh and Reardon had the two solo blocks in the opening set. Romano had a team-high 14 assists along with four digs.
The second set favored the Ramblers, who were able to knock down 12 kills for a .345 hitting percentage. For the Cardinals, Reardon had six kills with five added by Szews. Romano and Lemuel Turner each tallied one kill apiece in set number two. Romano also led the set with five digs. Loyola was able to even up the match score with the 25-20 set two victory.
Ball State had 16 kills, a .294 hitting percentage, two service aces, nine digs and five block assists in set three. Weiler led the way in kills with five with Reardon right behind with four. Szews had three kills with two added by Walsh, one from Romano and one from Parker Swartz. A Szews' kill secured the set three victory, 25-23.
In the finale, Weiler and Walsh were able to knock down three kills apiece. Reardon, Szews and Turner also got in on the action and added two kills each. Romano had seven of the team's nine assists along with one ace, one solo block and two digs. The Cardinals took the fourth set, 25-21.
The Ball State men's volleyball team now moves to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the MIVA. The Cardinals will continue conference action next weekend with trips to Quincy and Lindenwood.
