Hulecki’s Walk-Off Single Lifts Ball State to 4-3 Win Over UMass Lowell
February 17, 2018 | Baseball
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Junior Griffin Hulecki put an end to Saturday's final game at the Shipyard Classic with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Ball State baseball team to a 4-3 win over UMass Lowell.
With two outs and junior Seth Freed stranded at second base, Hulecki ripped an 0-2 pitch down the left field line past a diving John Polichetti at third base, allowing Freed to easily score the winning run. This was the first extra-inning, walk-off win for Ball State (2-1) since downing Western Michigan in 10 innings on April 20, 2014.
The Cardinals would not have made it to extra innings without a clutch hit from junior transfer William Baker. UMass Lowell, which had trailed the entire game, scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Baker came to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and sophomore Nolan Gazouski standing at second base. Baker blooped a ball down the right field line that River Hawks' right fielder Russ Olive just missed on a diving catch attempt. Gazouski raced home to set up the dramatic finish in the 10th inning.
Hulecki, hailing from Fishers, Indiana, went 3-for-5 at the plate against UMass Lowell (2-2). Baker chipped in with three hits as well while Gazouski reached base three times and scored twice.
Freshman pitcher Kyle Nicolas made his Ball State debut and did not disappoint. The righty went 5.0 innings, struck out nine batters and held UMass Lowell to one hit.
Ball State fell to Morehead State in the first game Saturday morning, 3-0. The Eagles' starting pitcher, Dalton Stambaugh, held the Cardinals to four singles over seven innings. The lefty also equaled a career high with eight strikeouts.
Ball State had its chances against Morehead State (1-2), stranding a pair of runners in the fifth and seventh innings. In the sixth, the Cardinals began the frame with back-to-back singles, but were unable to score.
MSU right fielder Jake Hammon reached base three times, doubled, scored a run and also had an RBI for the Eagles.
The Cardinals wrap up the opening weekend at the Shipyard Classic tomorrow, Feb. 18, with another game against Morehead State. Game time is set for 11:30 a.m.
