Cardinals Fall to George Mason in Doubleheader Cut Short by Rain
February 21, 2026 | Baseball
MOUNT PLEASAND, S.C. -- George Mason scored two runs in the first inning and three in the fourth, and that was all the Patriots needed to get past Ball State on Saturday morning, as the Cardinals left eight runners on base in a 6-1 decision as part of the Swig & Swine Classic at Shipyard Park. Game 2 of the scheduled tourney doubleheader, against Seton Hall, was canceled later in the afternoon, after the Pirates took over five hours to defeat Merrimack in 11 innings, then pouring doused the start of the second game.
The Cardinals battle Merrimack in the final game of the Swig & Swine Classic on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.
George Mason took its early lead with a lead-off double against Ball State starter Brendan Garza to start the game. The Patriots plated two runs with a bunt single and a timely triple. The Cardinals' Gavin Balius singled and stole second base in the Ball State half of the first, but he got hung up trying to advance on a ground ball for the first out of the inning, and two fly balls ended the brief scoring opportunity.
In all, Ball State left eight men on base in Game 1. Balius batted 3-of-4 on the day and stole three bases for the second straight game, but the Cardinals didn't push a run across home plate until D.J. Scheumann got a pinch-hit single in the ninth, and scored on a two-out grounder, to breakup the Patriots' shutout.
Garza allowed five runs on six hits, over four innings pitched. Reliever Owen Quinn fired five innings, allowing just one run on four hits as the Cardinals tried to stay in contention.
