Cardinals Upset No.8 Lewis In a 3-0 Sweep

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team returned home for the first time in six matches and did so in an exciting fashion. The Cardinals proved they are a force to be reckoned with in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association with a sweep (25-22, 25-19, 25-20) over No. 8 Lewis. Ball State picks up their first conference win of the season while breaking the Flyers' eight match win streak.
The Cardinals tallied 41 kills on the day with 37 assists. Ball State also had five service aces on the night. Defensively, the Cardinals had 47 digs, 14 block assists and one solo block. Ball State held Lewis to 27 kills for a .046 hitting percentage.
Blake Reardon led the way for Ball State with 14 kills along with five digs and two assists. Mitch Weiler also tallied double digit kills with 12, tying his season high. Weiler also had seven digs, three block assists and the lone Cardinal solo block. Matt Walsh had eight kills while Matt Szews had three. Walsh also led the team with four block assists. Jake Romano led the team with a season-high 14 digs. Romano also had two block assists and two kills. Anthony Lebryk added two kills and two block assists.
The opening set saw eight tied scores and four lead changes before the Cardinals took the set, 25-22, on a Lewis service error. Weiler led set one with four kills and three digs. Walsh added three kills with two apiece from Reardon and Szews. Romano had three straight service aces in the set to help shift momentum to Ball State.
The momentum continued for the Cardinals as they scored the first two points of set number two. Ball State was leading the set, 17-11, before a Lewis timeout. After the timeout, the Flyers came out and scored four straight points. The Cardinals were able to maintain their composure and took the set, 25-19. Reardon led the way with eight of the team's 16 kills. Weiler was able to add five kills, two digs and two block assists. Romano led the set in assists with 12 and in digs with seven.
The Flyers scored the first point of the closing set, but never led the rest of the set. Ball State took set three, 25-20, and took the match, 3-0. Reardon had four kills with three from Weiler and one added by Walsh. Lebryk, Romano and Szews were each able to knock down one kill apiece. Szews had the lone service ace for the Cardinals in the third set.
This victory marks the 31st win over the Flyers in the series history, but the first since the 2016 season. The Cardinals had lost the last three meetings.
The Ball State men's volleyball team will look to continue this energy as they take on No. 6 Loyola-Chicago tomorrow, Feb. 17. The Cardinals will welcome the MIVA rivals into Worthen for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
