MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team is set to travel East to take on No. 9 Penn State and Saint Francis. The Cardinals will take on Penn State Friday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. Ball State will then travel to the Saint Francis on Saturday, Feb. 2 to take on the Red Flash at 7 p.m.
The Cardinals will look to bounce back into the win column after falling to both Pepperdine and George Mason last weekend. Ball State fell to the 12th ranked Waves, 3-1 in round one of the Uvaldo Acosta Invitational. The Cardinals then had a disappointing loss to unranked George Mason, 3-1. The two loses caused Ball State to fall out of the top 15 AVCA coaches poll for the first time this season.
Blake Reardon led the team last weekend with a total of 25 kills for 3.12 kills per set. He also had six digs and five blocks. Matt Szews had 21 kills while Matt Walsh had 18 and Mitch Weiler had 12. Adam Wessel totaled 18 digs with nine added by Courtland Scharenborg.
Through the last two matches, Ball State has totaled 91 kills for 11.4 kills per set. The Cardinals also have 85 assists with a .394 assist percentage for 10.6 assists per set. The Cards tallied seven service aces for a .782 service percentage.
Scouting Penn State:
The Nittany Lions are coming into this weekend with a 3-2 record. Penn State fell to UCLA and Ohio State while picking up wins against Mount Olive, Alderson-Broaddus, and USC.
Penn State leads the all-time series 62-27, with Ball State winning the last meeting between the two. Last season, Penn State came into Muncie with the Cardinals winning, 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-17, 25-18). In that contest, Szews had 14 kills, four blocks and one service ace. Walsh had seven kills and two service aces. Weiler was able to add nine digs, four blocks and two assists.
Scouting Saint Francis:
The second match-up of the weekend will be at Saint Francis. The Red Flash will come into the weekend with a record of 5-5. Saint Francis fell to CSUN, Long Beach State, Lewis, Loyola-Chicago, and Ohio State, all of whom are ranked teams. The Red Flash picked up a big win over the then-eighth ranked Stanford along with wins over UC Santa Barbara, Alderson Broaddus, Mount Olive and Queens University of Charlotte.
The Cardinals lead the all-time series against the Red Flash, 14-6. Ball State took down Saint Francis last season at home, 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 27-25). Szews led the way in that contest with 16 kills along with five digs. Weiler had six kills, two blocks, two assists and one service aces. Nick LaVanchy had seven digs in the win.

As a team, Ball State is currently in the top three in the MIVA in six categories. The Cardinals sit atop the conference in block assists (140) and blocks per set (2.67). The team has tallied 473 points this season, which places them in the second place spot. Ball State is also second in digs with 267. The Cardinals are currently third in the conference in kills (357) and in assists (336). The Cardinal squad is also fourth nationally in blocks per set.
Individually, Szews and Walsh are both ranked in the MIVA and nationally. Szews is fourth in the conference in kills with 86. He is eighth nationally in attacks per set with 8.52. Walsh is second both the conference and in the nation in blocks per set with 1.37. Walsh is also 14th in hitting percentage (.393). Scharenborg is currently 18th nationally with 9.04 assists per set.

Multiple Cardinals are currently in the Ball State career record books (during rally scoring era). Walsh is second in both block assists (373) and total career blocks (412). He is sixth in blocks per set with 1.24 and in attack percentage with .403. Walsh is also eighth in career solo blocks with 39. Szews is second in Ball State history is service aces per set (.34) along with third in points per set (4.03) and in kills per set (3.33). Weiler's name is etched in the record books in attack attempts (18th, 1200), digs (15th, 388) and in service attempts (20th, 841). Wessel is fourth in digs per set with 2.09. Wessel is also ranked in assists (82), assists per set (0.48), and career digs (356). Scharenborg is also 10th in school history with 251 career assists through 30 sets.
