Women's Basketball Falls To SEC Foe Vanderbilt, 60-43
December 06, 2018 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team trailed early to Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt and couldn't recover losing the game, 60-43, Thursday night in Worthen Arena.
"It was a tough night shooting the ball," Ball State head coach Brady Sallee said. "I feel like these shots are going to start going down. I thought we had a few questionable shots that didn't make it easy for us but you can't fault them because they were trying to be aggressive and that is all you can ever ask for. It was a tough one, they beat us on the boards and in the paint."
Senior guard Jasmin Samz led the Cardinals in scoring with 10 points, going a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Freshman forward Thelma Dis Agustsdottir finished the game with nine points while teammate sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown had eight points and eight rebounds.
Despite the Cardinals (2-7) being on a two-game home court win streak, Vanderbilt (4-5) controlled the game from the opening tip, starting the contest with a 15-4 run.
The Cardinals struggled to get shots to fall in the first quarter, going 8-of-25 from the floor. The Commodores kept the pressure on and led 20-9 after the first frame.
Vanderbilt continued to make its presence felt down low in the second stanza. The Commodores used 22 points in the paint to take a 30-23 lead into halftime. Ball State did begin to find its groove on offense towards the end of the second period. The Cardinals closed the second frame with an 8-to-5 run. During the scoring spree, Ball State had help from freshman forward Blake Smith, who came off the bench scoring four of the Cardinals last eight points.
In the third period, Ball State began drawing fouls on the Commodore's aggressive style of play. The Cardinals were shooting 90 percent (9-of-10) from the charity stripe heading into the final period.
But Vanderbilt continued to find success in the paint, ending the game scoring 38 of its 60 points down low.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues non-conference action when it travels to Western Kentucky, Dec. 16 for a 6 p.m. ET tipoff in E.A. Diddle Arena.
