Brown’s Career-High Lifts WBB Over Western Kentucky, 86-83
December 16, 2018 | Women's Basketball
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown scored a career-high 25 points while adding 10 rebounds to help Ball State beat Western Kentucky by a score of 86-83 Sunday evening in E.A. Diddle Arena.
With the win, the Cardinals improve their overall record to 3-7 while the Lady Toppers fall to 5-7 on the year. Today's victory over WKU marks the first time since 2008 that Ball State has won in E.A. Diddle Arena.
Brown recorded her eighth career double-double, after a 25-point, 10 rebound performance. Sophomore guard Maliah Howard-Bass also had a strong scoring day with a season-best 17 points. Senior guard Jasmin Samz recorded 12 points and teammate freshman forward Thelma Dis Agustsdottir finished the game with 10.
The contest proved to be a back-and-fourth battle between Ball State and Western Kentucky, as the game saw 14 ties and 10 lead changes. But the Cardinals prevailed after outrebounding the Lady Toppers 32-24. Another factor was Ball State's success at the charity stripe, as the Cardinals shot a season-high 78 percent (31-40) from the free throw line. Brown and Howard-Bass closed the game going 5-of-6 from the foul line.
The score was tied four times in the first quarter but Ball State never let Western Kentucky take the lead. The Cardinals shot 45 percent (5-of-11) from the field to take an 18-16 advantage over the Lady Toppers at the conclusion of the first quarter.
Both teams continued to play a tight knit ball game the remainder of the half. The game was tied 25-25 at the 5:58 mark until an 8-0 run allowed the Cardinals to gain some momentum. With 3:36 left in the first half, Ball State had built a 33-25 lead over the Lady Toppers. WKU raised its defense to close out the second period but BSU managed to still hold onto a one-point (38-37) advantage over the Lady Toppers at intermission.
The second half mimicked the first 20 minutes of play, as each possession continued to be more crucial than the last. With 6:16 left, true freshman Gabby Smith came up with the steal and a fast break layup to put Ball State up by seven (64-57). But WKU didn't give up and would come within two (85-83) with 5.8 seconds on the clock. In the Lady Toppers last efforts to win, they were forced to send Ball State to the foul line. Brown and Howard-Bass went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe to seal the win for the Cardinals.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns to Worthen Arena on Dec. 21 for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off against Tennessee State before the holiday break. After that, the Cardinals close out their non-conference season at home against Urbana University (Ohio) on Dec. 30 at 2 p.m.
