Cardinals Dominant in 3-0 Shutout of Western Michigan
October 07, 2018 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – Peighton Cook and Amanda Shaw scored early goals in the first half before Jenna Dombrowski buried a penalty kick in the second, and the Ball State University soccer team shut out Western Michigan, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
The Cardinals improved to 7-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in MAC play while Western Michigan fell to 10-4-0 and 4-2-0 in conference.
"We've been persistent with trying to enhance our offense. The last couple games we've had chances and just haven't been able to convert, which has been frustrating. But today we knew that if we converted the chances we created, we were going to be scoring more goals and be in more positive situations," said head coach Craig Roberts. "I though the girls came out of the blocks very quickly today. They took their opportunities and converted very well."
Shaw, who scored the game winner in Ball State's previous match, was a catalyst for the offense from the first touch. She fed the ball to Cook at the top of the 18 in the second minute, and Cook buried the shot as she beat the keeper to the bottom left corner of the net. Shaw was credited with the assist.
Moments later, Shaw got her own chance at goal and came through with an impressive strike to the upper 90 to put BSU up 2-0 in just the 12th minute. The defense went to work for the remainder of the half as the Cardinals held that score going into the break.
The score stayed the same for the next 30 minutes, but Ball State was not satisfied with its lead as it continued to attack. Dombrowski made a run into the box in the 74th minute and drew a foul to be awarded a penalty kick. She stepped up to the spot and converted to deliver a third goal and put the match out of reach.
"We're not even at our best yet," Roberts said. "We're consistently getting better and the improvements are coming along. We're getting stronger and stronger as we go throughout the season."
Despite winning 3-0, BSU was surprisingly outshot 12-9 on the day. Shots on goal were even at six apiece. The defense was solid all day though, and Tristin Stuteville saved all six of the shots she faced. The Broncos had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks, but the Cardinals' defense cleared every one of them.
Ball State will remain home for its next match, which will take place on Friday (Oct. 12) at 4 p.m. ET when the Akron Zips come to town.
