Men’s Golf Finishes Fall with Runner-up at Musketeer Classic

CINCINNNATI -- The Ball State men's golf team held onto second place Tuesday at the Musketeer Classic and finished with four players among the top 12 on the leaderboard.

CJ Jones, buoyed by his 65 in the opening round, completed the 54-hole event with a career-best third-place finish in the field of 84 golfers. Competing as an individual, he posted a 1-over-par total of 214 for the week at Maketewah Country Club.

Keegan Bronnenberg was one shot behind him in a tie for fourth to lead the Ball State lineup with his best career result and second top-10 of the year. Joey Ranieri (T9) and Timothy Wiseman (T12) also had their best finishes of the season.

Ohio State ran away with the tournament in the final round. Ball State was tied with the Buckeyes after the opening 18 holes and was just six back when round two was completed early Tuesday after being suspended by darkness.

But Ohio State, the highest-ranked team in the 13-team field, turned in the only under-par final round and bested the Cardinals by 12 shots over the final 18 holes to ride out an 18-stroke win at 851 (-1). BSU (+17) held off Northern Kentucky by seven stokes for second.

Ohio State's Will Grimmer, the 36th-ranked player in the country, carded his third straight round in the 60's to claim medalist honors at 11 under par. He won by 11 shots over teammate Daniel Wetterich.

Ball State closed with a team score of 294, its highest of the week, in the final round. Wiseman led the way with a 72, while the Cardinals also counted a 73 from Ranieri, a 74 from Bronnenberg and a 75 from Jack Cunningham.

The Musketeer Classic was the last of five fall tournaments for Ball State, which will shut it down until Feb. 11 when it hosts the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play in Dade City, Florida.
