Jones Goes Low, Men’s Golf Near Lead at Musketeer Classic
October 22, 2018 | Men's Golf
Cardinals eight shots off lead with play suspended in second round at Maketewah
CINCINNATI -- Ball State men's golfer CJ Jones celebrated his birthday Monday morning with four birdies, two eagles and an opening-round 65 at Xavier's Musketeer Classic.
Jones' 6-under-par score matched the lowest by a Ball State golfer since 2009 and highlighted a long day that saw a frost delay at the start and a suspension for darkness at the end.
Ball State was in second place as a team, trailing only Ohio State, when play was halted late in the second of Monday's two rounds. That round will be completed Tuesday morning before the start of the final 18 holes at Maketewah Country Club.
Jones is competing as an individual this week, so the Cardinals could not count his low round toward the team score. But they could count Keegan Bronnenberg's 67, his eighth consecutive round of par or better.
Bronnenberg led Ball State to a team score of 288, which was good for a first-place tie with Ohio State after the opening 18 holes. He and Jones occupied the top two spots on the leaderboard at the conclusion of round one.
Ohio State opened up an eight-shot lead by the time play was suspended. The Buckeyes are 1 under par for the tournament, two-thirds of the way through round two. Ball State (+7) is second, and Butler (+13) is third in the 14-team field.
Will Grimmer of Ohio State climbed to the top of the leaderboard in the second round. He is 7 under par and leads by two over second-place Jones and by five over third-place Bronnenberg. Those three are the only players in red figures.
Joey Ranieri is tied for 10th to give Ball State three golfers in the top 10. At even-par through 13 holes, he and fellow freshman Yianni Kostouros have the Cardinals' best second rounds going. Timothy Wiseman is tied for 17th and Jack Cunningham 26th.
Tuesday's action is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. as the teams complete round two before beginning the final round. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
