Men’s Golf Starts Fast, Finishes Sixth in Final Round at Chatham Hills
October 15, 2018 | Men's Golf
Keegan Bronnenberg extends streak to seven consecutive rounds of par or better
WESTFIELD, Ind. -- A blistering start from Timothy Wiseman helped the Ball State men's golf team climb the leaderboard Monday before the Cardinals gave some ground down the stretch to finish sixth, one shot out of the top 5, at the Chatham Hills Collegiate.
Wiseman eagled the par-5 13th, his fourth hole of the day, to get to 4 under early in his round. He picked up two more birdies on his second nine but lost some shots on the way in to finish at 71 (-1) for the day. Still, he was the Cardinals' best score.
Ball State also counted a 72 from Keegan Bronnenberg, a 73 from Yianni Kostouros and a 76 from Jack Cunningham on the way to a team score of 292 (+4) for the day. But the Cardinals were as low as 5 under for the round early on their second nine. They finished with a total of 868 (+4) over 54 holes at The Club at Chatham Hills.
Purdue (-18) mounted a comeback from 11 shots back entering the day to nip Northwestern by two strokes for the team title. Overnight leader Marquette (-15) dropped to third, while tournament host Indiana (-12) also finished under par. The 11-team field featured seven of the top 100 in the Golfweek rankings.
Northwestern's David Nyfjall, the 36-hole leader, shared medalist honors with IUPUI's Austin Crowder who came from four shots back to match him at 11 under par.
Bronnenberg's 72 was marked his seventh consecutive round of even-par or better and his ninth in 11 competitive rounds this fall. He finished in a tie for 18th place at 1 under to lead Ball State, while Wiseman and Kostouros tied for 30th at 3 over. Cunningham was 4 over.
Kostouros led the Cardinals with 12 birdies over the three rounds this week. The freshman from Crown Point, Indiana, was in red figures for at least a portion of all three rounds and for the majority of the last two. He was 2 under through 15 holes Monday before giving three shots back coming home.
The Chatham Hills Collegiate was the fourth of five events on Ball State's fall schedule. The Cardinals will play the final one Oct. 22-23 at Xavier's Muskies Classic at Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati.
