WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Ball State University swimming and diving team strung together a strong day of competition as the women's squad finished second overall while the men finished third at the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet at Purdue University on Saturday afternoon.
"It was a good opening meet on the road," said head coach J. Agnew. "The team brought some fight and a whole lot of energy to West Lafeyette."
The day got started with the 200-yard medley relays. The women entered three groups that claimed third, seventh and ninth places. The combination of Audrey Schank, Abbie McCarter, Makenna Bottorff and Peighton Gilbert secured the top-three finish. On the men's side, the two groups finished in sixth and seventh place.
Rachel Bertram claimed third place in both the one and three-meter dives with identical scores of 258.20. Caitlin Locante set a career best on the one-meter dive with 242.95 as did Sean Wolfe on the three-meter dive with a score of 256.95, good for third place.
"I'm really proud of how we competed today, particularly with where we are at in our training right now," said diving coach Nick Gayes. "We'll take the next couple weeks to keep building and get ready for the next few meets."
In the women's 500-yard freestyle, Katie Walker locked down a third-place finish with a time of 5:09.30 for the Cardinals. Not far behind were Liz Madison, Elizabeth Graham and Cassidy Blackwin in fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
McCarter and Alex Bader narrowly missed podium finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke, coming in at fourth and fifth. Luke Nondorf was the top finisher in the same event on the men's side, coming in at eighth with a time of 59.79.
Another top-three finish for BSU came in the women's 200-yard freestyle relay. A team of Alexa McDonald, Bottorff, Alex Bader and Anne Vormohr finished with a time of 1:38.60.
The women's squad finished with an overall score of 454 and only behind Purdue. Evansville, DePauw, Indiana Wesleyan and Manchester rounded out the team standings. The men's side collected 260 points, finishing behind Purdue and Evansville. Wabash, DePauw and Manchester were the remaining teams.
"The women are looking forward to opening MAC competition against Bowling Green, and the men will get an extra week of practice in before Eastern Illinois," Agnew said. "Every day this team is moving forward and I can't wait to see what the next day brings."
Next up for Ball State is a women's meet at Bowling Green on Friday, Oct. 26. Both teams will then take on Eastern Illinois in a co-ed meet on Friday, Nov. 2, that will serve as the home opener at Lewellen Aquatics Center.
