Men’s Volleyball Dominates Emmanuel For Second Win of Season

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team picked up its second win of the season with a sweep (25-16, 25-15, 25-12) of Emmanuel Saturday night.
The Cardinals racked up an impressive 41 kills in the three sets for a .429 hitting percentage. Ball State also posted 38 assists, 31 digs, 14 blocks and 10 service aces.
Ben Chinnici led the Cardinals again with 12 kills, four digs and 1 assist. Matt Szews added 10 kills, three block assists and one dig. Nick LaVanchy and Courtland Scharenborg both led Ball State with five digs. Scharenborg also added a match high 29 assists.
In the opening set, the Cardinals took the first four points on two Matt Walsh kills, a Mitch Weiler kill and a Lion error. Emmanuel was only able to pull within three for the rest of the first set. Ball State had 14 kills for a .565 hitting percentage. Szews and Walsh each tallied a set high four kills. Szews was a perfect 4-for-4 in the opening set. Walsh once again had a set winning kill.
The beginning of the second set proved to be more of a challenge for the Cardinals. The Lions struck first in set two and stuck with Ball State until 11-11. After the 11-11 mark the Cardinals were able to pull away and take set two, 25-15. Chinnici and Szews each led the set with six kills.
The closing set was all Ball State from the beginning. The set was highlighted by seven service aces. Freshman Ryan Dorgan had his first career service ace. Jake Romano tallied a set high three service aces while Anthony Lebryk added two. The Cardinals won the match on a Lemuel Turner service ace in set three.
The 14th ranked Ball State men's volleyball team will return to action next weekend against two top 10 opponents. The Cardinals will take on No 3. BYU on Friday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Worthen Arena. On Saturday, Jan. 13, Ball State will welcome the eighth ranked Stanford Cardinal to Muncie at 7:30 p.m.
