Men’s Volleyball Suffers First Loss of Season to No. 6 BYU

MUNCIE, Ind. – The 14th ranked Ball State men's volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of sixth ranked Brigham Young University Friday evening in Muncie. The Cardinals fell to the Cougars in front of a crowd of more than 1,000 fans, 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 15-25, 20-25).
In a high intensity environment, Ball State and BYU both tallied 47 kills. The Cardinals also had 44 assists, 35 digs, 11 block assists, four service aces and three solo blocks.
Matt Szews led the match with 17 kills along with nine digs and three block assists. Mitch Weiler was able to add nine kills, seven digs and one service ace in the contest. Matt Walsh also had nine kills plus one solo block and one block assist. Ben Chinnici had eight kills while Parker Swartz and David Siebum each knocked down two. Courtland Scharenborg finished the night with 42 assists.
The opening set went to the Cougars, 25-19. A set that saw five tied scores was highlighted by four Szews' kills. Chinnici also added three kills while Walsh and Weiler tallied two each. Walsh and Swartz each had a service ace in the first set.
The Cardinals came back to even the score with a big set two victory, 25-16. Ball State had 14 kills while holding BYU to only six kills and a negative hitting percentage. Chinnici, Walsh and Scharenborg each had huge blocks to help secure the set two win.
After the 10 minute break, the Cougars came out blazing and took the third set, 25-15. The Cardinals struggled to keep up in set three, marking only a .103 hitting percentage. Walsh and Szews each knocked down three kills while Weiler and Chinnici had two apiece.
The fourth set saw 10 tied scores and two lead changes, but eventually BYU prevailed, 25-20. Szews led the Cardinals with five kills in the closing set with Walsh, Swartz and Siebum each adding two. The Cardinals were also able to knock down five blocks in set four.
The Ball State men's volleyball team (2-1) will look to bounce back against Stanford tomorrow, Jan. 13 in Muncie. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m.
