Men’s Volleyball Unable to Perform Upset over No. 12 Pepperdine

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Ball State men's volleyball team traveled to Fairfax, Va. Saturday evening to compete in the Uvaldo Acosta Invitational. The Cardinals' first test in the invite was No. 12 Pepperdine. Ball State was unable to take down the West Coast powerhouse and fell, 3-1.
The Cardinals racked up 45 kills with 41 assists in the four sets of play. Ball State was posted 24 digs, 17 total blocks and five service aces. Blake Reardon and Matt Walsh led the way for the 14th ranked Cardinals with 13 kills apiece. Matt Szews knocked down eight kills along with Ben Chinnici's seven. Courtland Scharenborg led the way in assists with 39. Defensively, Adam Wessel had a team high seven digs while Walsh had six blocks.
The opening set saw seven ties and three lead changes before a Scharenborg kill secured the 25-20 Ball State victory. The Cardinals had 13 total kills and hit 50 percent in set one. Walsh was a perfect 4-for-4 in kills, leading the set. Chinnici and Reardon each had three kills with Szews adding one. Szews was also able to make a statement with two service aces. As a team, Ball State was able to tally 3.0 total team blocks.
Set two started off on an attack error by the Cardinals and went on to see five tied scores and two lead changes. Ball State struggled in this set, only knocking down nine kills and hitting .115 percent. Szews was able to hit four of those kills while Reardon and Chinnici each had two. Reardon and Chinnici were also able to each add one block assist. Walsh had one block assist along with the only solo block in the set.
The hardships continued into set three where Pepperdine was able to score the first three points of the set. The Cardinals were down by as many as six in the third set, but were able to claw their way back within one. However, Ball State's fight was not enough to pick up the win and they fell, 25-23.Walsh had six kills and hit for .714 in the set. Walsh, Chinnici and Scharenborg were all able to tally blocks in set three.
The Waves were able to come out and score the first three points of the final set as well before a Walsh kill put the score 3-1. As the set continued so did the hitting struggles for the Cardinals, with two athletes hitting in the negatives. Ball State finished the set with eight kills, three digs and 1.5 total team blocks.
Ball State falls to 1-8 all-time against Pepperdine, last beating them in March 1997 at a neutral site (3-1).
The Ball State men's volleyball team (4-3) will continue play at the Uvaldo Acosta Invitational tomorrow, Jan. 28 in Fairfax. The Cardinals will take on host George Mason at 5 p.m.
