Soccer Perseveres for 1-1 Draw at Toledo

Cardinals finish road weekend 1-0-1 to open conference play
TOLEDO, Ohio -- Ball State was so close to an offensive explosion Sunday, but soccer can be a game of inches at times. At the end of 110 minutes in Toledo, the Cardinals settled for a 1-1 draw and a hard-earned point in the Mid-American Conference standings.
The crossbar and the fingertips of Toledo goalkeeper Madison Perrin conspired to keep Ball State off the scoreboard for much of the afternoon. But the Cardinals stuck with it and came from a goal down late in the game to cap an unbeaten opening weekend of MAC play.
"I'm really proud of the perseverance and commitment we showed through some adversity today," Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. "We got back in the game when other teams would have crumbled. We're disappointed not to get more out of today; it's a game I felt we deserved to win. But you have to get points on the road, and for us to come away with a win and a tie this weekend is not bad."
Hannah Scafaria gave Toledo (4-4-2, 1-0-1 MAC) the lead early in the second half, and that was the game's only goal until the 83rd minute. Ball State (3-5-2, 1-0-1 MAC) had racked up 13 shots and hit the crossbar three times but had not been able to break through.
That changed when junior midfielder Lauren Roll deflected a shot off a Toledo player and into the back of the net to end the frustration.
Roll had been one of the Cardinals to hit the bar earlier in the game, joining Allison Abbe and Amanda Shaw. The Cardinals also challenged Perrin with 11 shots on frame throughout the day, but the Toledo keeper stood tall to save all but one of them.
BSU had the only scoring opportunities in the overtime periods, but Perrin made a pair of diving saves to stop attempts from Nicky Potts and Julia Elvbo.
"We created numerous chances from all areas of the field; we were just unfortunate not to convert them," Roberts said. "Lauren Roll was outstanding today. She put forth a great performance with great attitude and commitment. Julia Elvbo played well again, Nicky Potts played her best game for us so far, and Lucy Walton was great at left mid in front of her hometown crowd."
Ball State finished the afternoon with a dominant advantage in both total shots (21-4) and corner kicks (8-0). The game was evenly played in the early going, but the Cardinals created the lion's share of the chances as the afternoon progressed.
Toledo had one great opportunity in the first half, but the Cardinals did well to clear a dangerous ball and then goalkeeper Tristin Stuteville came out to make a clutch save seconds later.
"I thought defensively we played very well," Roberts said. "We consistently shut down any attempts they had. We dominated the aerial battles in the vertical midfield with Julia and Amanda. I felt we were clearly the better team."
Sunday marked Ball State's seventh road contest in the first 10 games of the season. The Cardinals will now return home for five of their next six. The team continues MAC play at the Briner Sports Complex next weekend, welcoming Ohio on Friday (5 p.m.) and Kent State on Sunday (2 p.m.).
