MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team will travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on powerhouse James Madison this weekend. The Cardinals will go head-to-head with the No. 13 Dukes Friday, Sept. 22 at 3:30 p.m.
James Madison will go into the weekend with a 5-2 overall record so far this season. The Dukes have taken down two ranked team in No. 25 Liberty, 3-1, and No. 23 Old Dominion, 3-2. JMU has also defeated Lafayette, Saint Joseph's, and the newest Mid-American Conference addition Appalachian State. The team's two losses came from No.1 Duke and No. 7 North Carolina. Junior forward Miranda Rigg leads James Madison with six goals and a .538 shot-on-goal percentage so far this season. Junior Ashley Gippe will be another player the Cardinals will look to stop. Gippe has four goals, eight points and a .833 shot-on-goal percentage in the 2017 season.
Going into this weekend's tough matchup, the Cardinals are second in the conference in goals against average with 1.42. They are also second in the MAC with two shutouts and second in total goals allowed with nine.
Freshman Grace Chavez goes into the weekend first in the MAC with an impressive .800 save percentage. Chavez has tallied 36 total saves, third in the conference, along with two shutouts and only allowing nine goals.
The last time these two teams met was in the 2013 season. The Cardinals traveled to Harrisonburg, Va., in the 2013 season opener and fell, 8-1.
