
Cardinals Take Down Lehigh in Overtime Thriller

BETHLEHEM, Pa.– The Ball State field hockey team rounded out the weekend with a road game against Lehigh. The Cardinals bounced back into the win column with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh was the first to put points on the board when Amanda Boyer was able to tip in a shot in the 26th minute to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Senior Abbey Main was the next to score in the contest. Main was able to connect with the back of the cage with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime. She led the way for the Cardinals today with four shots, three shots on goal and one goal.
Co-captain Anya Eicher came through with the game winning goal for the Cardinals. Eicher got the ball past Lehigh on a penalty corner in the 79th minute of play. She was assisted by Carley Shannon.
Michelle Shampton tallied three shots and three shots on goal for the day. Darbi Gullett marked two shots and one shot on goal while Kylee Cunningham and Shannon each had one shot.
In the cage, Grace Chavez played all 79:17 minutes of action and recorded six saves.
As a team, the Cardinals racked up 14 shots, nine shots on goal and one assist. Ball State had zero penalty corners in the first half, three penalty corners in the second half and one in overtime.
The Cardinals (3-3) will travel to College Station, Pa. to take on Saint Francis on Friday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. Ball State will then head to Bloomington, Ind. in hopes of taking down in-state rival Indiana on Sunday, Sept.17.
