Cardinals enter 2017 campaign fresh off back-to-back titles
The Ball State soccer team will tune up for the 2017 season Friday with a 5 p.m. exhibition contest against Oakland at the Briner Sports Complex. Admission is free, as it is for all Ball State soccer home games.
Â
The Cardinals, who have been training for a week now, are coming off their second consecutive Mid-American Conference regular season championship a year ago. BSU finished the 2016 campaign at 14-3-3 overall (9-1-1 MAC).
Â
This year's team returns 16 letterwinners, including the team's top three scorers from last season in Sam Kambol (six goals), Emily Scott (five) and Lauren Roll (four) plus a pair of experienced goalkeepers in All-MAC First Team selection Alyssa Heintschel and Tristin Stuteville. The Cardinals also welcome the addition of a dozen talented newcomers in head coach Craig Roberts' eighth season.
Â
Oakland went 9-10-1 last year (5-4-0 Horizon League) and reached the semifinals of its conference tournament. The Grizzlies are entering their first season under head coach Juan Pablo Favero.
Â
Friday's matchup will serve as Ball State's lone exhibition. The Cardinals open the regular season one week later with an Aug. 18 home date against Fort Wayne. BSU will play a total of eight regular season home games at the Briner Sports Complex.
