Field Hockey Set to Open Regular Season at Home
August 24, 2017 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team is slated to open its regular season action this weekend at the BSU Turf Field. The Cardinals will take on Saint Louis Friday, Aug. 25 at noon then face the Ohio Bobcats on Sunday, Aug. 27.
The last time Ball State and Saint Louis met was in 2014. The Billikens came to Muncie and defeated the Cardinals, 3-4. The then-freshmen, Abbey Main and Carley Shannon, both scored their first career goals in that contest.
Ball State and Ohio met twice last season with both victories going to the Bobcats. The first meeting took place in Athens, Ohio where the Cardinals fell in overtime, 3-2. Ohio later traveled to Muncie and defeated Ball State, 2-1. Carley Shannon was the lone Cardinal to score in that contest.
This year's team is highlighted by the return of seniors Merinda Morley, Carley Shannon and Abbey Main. Second team All-MAC selection, Darbi Gullett, will also be returning this season alongside fellow juniors Anya Eicher and Beth Barnes. Ball State is also welcoming back redshirt sophomore powerhouses, Hannah Bohn and Michelle Shampton. Hillary Scott and Haley Jolly will be two to watch as they move into their sophomore seasons along with redshirt freshmen Alison McMullen, Sierra Jefferson, Olivia Susi, and Rachel Pereira. The Cardinals are also boasting an impressive freshman class of eight newcomers.
Last season, the Cardinals finished the season with an 8-11 overall record and 3-3 in the Mid-American Conference under first year head coach Christy Longacre. The team made their way to the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2011 where they fell to the number 1 seeded Kent State.
