Top Stories of 2016-17: Kennedy’s Record-Breaking Game
July 24, 2017 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Another athletic year is in the books for the Cardinals. Ball State student-athletes, coaches and teams accomplished several notable feats in 2016-17 and left their mark on the university.
Through much discussion, BallStateSports.com has identified the top 10 storylines of the year. We are revealing the storylines one-by-one each week over a period of 10 weeks. In early August, once they have all been announced, fans will be able to vote for their favorite stories of the year.
The stories are being revealed in chronological order, beginning with the fall season and running through the spring. We continue this week with a look back at senior baseball player Sean Kennedy's record-breaking day against Bowling Green on April 15 …
Kennedy Racks Up 17 Total Bases in Blowout Win Over BGSU
Sean Kennedy was one of the seniors expected to play a key role on the 2017 baseball team. He was a three-year starter on the infield, twice named Ball State's Defensive Player of the Year and earned All-Mid-American Conference second team honors as a freshman. One thing Kennedy was not known for was his ability to hit the long ball.
That changed this past spring.
Entering his final season with the Cardinals, Kennedy had totaled five home runs in three years. The native of Dayton, Ohio erupted for 12 home runs in 2017 and his best day at the plate came on April 15 against Bowling Green.
Kennedy homered in the first, fourth and fifth innings in the 23-5 rout over the Falcons. He also tallied a two-run triple in the seventh inning. Kennedy finished the contest 5-for-5 at the plate with three home runs, a triple, a double and nine RBIs.
He set a program single-game record with 17 total bases, surpassing Brad Miller's mark of 16 total bases against Valparaiso in 2004. Meanwhile, Kennedy's home run and RBI numbers were each one shy of the Ball State record.
Kennedy went on to finish the season with team highs in home runs (12), RBIs (50), doubles (16), hits (75) and slugging percentage (.566). The infielder was a first team All-MAC and ABCA All-Mideast Region honoree.
So Kennedy did play a key role for the 2017 Cardinals, in fact it was good enough to put his name in the Ball State record book.
