MUNCIE, Ind. – Another athletic year is in the books for the Cardinals. Ball State student-athletes, coaches and teams accomplished several notable feats in 2016-17 and left their mark on the university.
Through much discussion, BallStateSports.com has identified the top 10 storylines of the year. We will reveal the storylines one-by-one each week for the next 10 weeks. In early August, once they have all been announced, fans will be able to vote for their favorite stories of the year.
The stories will be revealed in chronological order, beginning with the fall season and running through the spring. We continue this week with a look back at the women's basketball team making program history with three players reaching 1,000 career points in the same season …
For the first time in Ball State women's basketball program history, the Cardinals saw three players reach 1,000 career points during the same season: senior guard Jill Morrison, senior center Renee Bennett and junior forward Moriah Monaco.
Morrison was the first of the trio to reach the milestone. She became the 25th member of the Ball State women's basketball 1,000-point club after tallying 15 points in a 93-49 win against Urbana on Dec. 28 in Worthen Arena. Morrison ended her career with the Cardinals with a total of 1,170 points.
At Bowling Green on Jan.21, Bennett scored her 1,000th point off a jumper with 36 seconds left on the game clock. She led all scorers that game with 22 points and 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and seventh of her career. Bennett became the 26th player in program history to reach the milestone while helping the Cardinals defeat the Falcons by a score of 75-53. She ended her four years at Ball State with 1,246 points.
Monaco became the 27th player in program history to reach 1,000 points Feb. 25 at home in an 81-73 win over Central Michigan, the Cardinals' their 20th overall victory of the season. She ended the game with 20 points, six rebounds and three assists. Monaco enters her senior year in 2017-18 with 1,068 points.
The trio helped the Cardinals to their fifth straight Women's National Invitation Tournament appearance and eighth overall along with a 21-11 overall mark and 14-4 Mid-American Conference ledger.
