TJ Harmon Leads Ball State to 3-0 Shutout Win
May 09, 2017 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Sophomore TJ Harmon tossed 7.1 innings of shutout baseball to help the Ball State baseball team pick up a 3-0 win over local rival Fort Wayne Tuesday afternoon at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Ball State (26-22) has now won five straight meetings against Fort Wayne (8-37) and leads the all-time series, 18-2.
Harmon, a native of Russiaville, Indiana, had only thrown 2.1 innings all season entering today's game. The righty held the Mastodons to three hits and struck out five batters. At one point early in the contest, Harmon retired 10 consecutive Fort Wayne batters.
Fort Wayne's starting pitcher, Damian Helm, matched Harmon's performance through the first four innings. Ball State mustered just two singles off Helm in the opening four frames.
However, a costly fielding error in the bottom of the fifth allowed Ball State to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Sophomore Roman Baisa gave the Cardinals the only run it would need with a sacrifice fly.
Senior Sean Kennedy added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. He launched a two-out, 1-2 pitch over the left field fence for his team-leading 10th home run to make the score 2-0. Fellow senior Alex Maloney led off the eighth inning with a double to the right-center gap, and he proceeded to score two batters later on another sacrifice fly.
Fort Wayne mounted a scoring threat in the top of the eighth, but senior left Kevin Marnon came out of the bullpen and stranded two runners on base. This was Ball State's third shutout of the season. The previous shutout came in a 6-0 win over Dayton on March 18.
Kennedy led Ball State at the plate, going 2-for-4 with the solo home run. Fort Wayne's leadoff hitter, Jackson Boyce, recorded three of the Mastodons' four hits with a double and two singles.
Ball State is right back in action tomorrow evening, May 10, at Ohio State. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
