Cardinals Pull Away From Ohio State, 14-4
May 10, 2017 | Baseball
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Caleb Stayton and junior Seth Freed combined for nine RBIs to lead the Ball State baseball team to a convincing 14-4 win at Ohio State Wednesday evening. The Cardinals (27-22) have now defeated three Big Ten teams this season.
Stayton's two-run home run in the fifth inning, his third of the year, gave Ball State the lead for good. Freed added a two-run triple as part of a four-run sixth inning to put the Cardinals ahead, 9-4. Freed then capped the night with a bases clearing double in the top of the ninth inning.
Stayton finished 2-for-4 with a home run, sacrifice fly, four RBIs and three runs scored. Freed was a home run shy of the cycle. His triple was the fifth of the season, equaling senior Matt Eppers for the team lead. The native of Bay City, Michigan, went 3-for-5 with a season-high five RBIs.
Meanwhile, junior Jeff Riedel tallied three hits, a stolen base and scored four times.
The Ball State bullpen held Ohio State (19-30) in check the last four-plus innings. Junior Brendan Burns and sophomore Nick Floyd limited the Buckeyes to one hit the final 4.2 innings while striking out nine batters. Burns came on in the fifth and worked out of a jam to earn his third win.
With the win, Ball State improves to 3-3 against the Big Ten. The Cardinals have defeated Ohio State, Purdue and Maryland while suffering a couple of extra inning losses to Indiana.
Ball State wraps up its home schedule this weekend with a non-conference series against Western Carolina. Game one is set for Friday, May 12, at 3 p.m.
