Wednesday – Kevin Marnon, LHP (5-4, 5.14 ERA, 51 Ks)
Around the Horn
Opening Pitch: Ball State is set to play five non-conference games in a span of six days this week. Tuesday is Ball State's final midweek home game on the 2017 schedule. The Cardinals are 1-2 in midweek home games with losses to Purdue (March 22) and Butler (March 28), as well as a win against Valparaiso (April 11).
Sophomore RHP TJ Harmon is expected to get the start on the mound against Fort Wayne. This will be his sixth appearance of the season and first start. His only other collegiate start came in 2016 against Dayton. That day, the righty went 3.2 innings and allowed three runs in a 3-1 loss.
Senior LHP Kevin Marnon will get the nod against Ohio State Wednesday evening. He leads the squad in games started (12) and is tied for the team lead in wins (5).
Series History: Ball State holds a 17-2 edge in the all-time series against Fort Wayne and has won four straight over the Mastodons. The most recent meeting between the two teams came on May 6, 2015 with the Cardinals pulling out a 6-5 victory. Ball State never led in that game until 1B Caleb Stayton hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Ohio State holds the lead in the all-time series against Ball State, 13-6. However, the Cardinals were victorious in the most recent meeting, 8-6, in 2014. INF Sean Kennedy went 2-for-3 with two RBIs that day. Former Cardinal T.J. Weir hit a two-run home run and also pitched the final two innings to notch the save.
Giving the Big Ten Big Fits: Ball State is 2-3 against Big Ten foes this year, but could easily be 4-1. Two of Ball State's three losses have come against Indiana, which is No. 21 in the RPI rankings, in extra innings. The Cardinals defeated Maryland as well as Purdue earlier in the year.
